The Functional Medicine Approach

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a modern approach to the healthcare needs of the 21st century. It enables practitioners to be proactive, predictive, and personalised in their therapies, allowing clients to actively engage in their health and well-being journey.

The functional medicine approach to health identifies underlying imbalances in a client to find the root cause of their health problems. It’s not just about treating their symptoms. It looks at people as individuals, so programs can be tailored to address their specific needs.

A functional medicine practitioner aims to help their client achieve optimal health through a combination of dietary and lifestyle advice. Where appropriate this may include supplements and further testing.

How it works?

A functional medicine practitioner works as a team with their client to uncover the root cause of their health symptoms. They consider their client’s medical history, taking into account dietary, genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can directly affect their health and well-being. By analysing the client’s current symptoms and history, a functional medicine practitioner will devise an individualised plan for their client to follow. They will support their client with personalised care with follow-up sessions to monitor progress and fine-tune the program to fit their individual needs. Optimal health is the goal.

Why should I consider the functional medicine approach?

Client-centred
Functional medicine practitioners take time to become familiar with their client’s medical issues and tailor personalised programs specific to their needs. A typical first consultation can take up to an hour and a half. They follow up, if needed, with further support.
Holistic, not specific
By considering the body as a whole instead of just focusing on the symptoms, the functional medicine approach can help to identify and address the root cause of a health issue.
Empowers the client
Empowering the client to actively take part in their health journey increases the likelihood of them adhering to their changes to sustain their newfound optimal health.
